How to Build a Simple 3-Step Routine That Works
The skincare industry wants you to buy 12 products. Your skin needs three.
Cleanse
The goal of cleansing is to remove dirt, oil, sweat, and sunscreen — not to leave your skin squeaky-clean and stripped. If your face feels tight after washing, your cleanser is too harsh.
Morning: A gentle, non-foaming cleanser is enough. Some people skip morning cleansing entirely and just rinse with water — perfectly fine if your skin tolerates it.
Evening: This is when cleansing matters most. If you wear sunscreen or makeup, double cleanse: an oil-based cleanser first, followed by a gentle water-based one.
Treat
This is where you address your specific concerns. Pick one or two active ingredients — more is not better.
| Concern | Active ingredient |
|---|---|
| Acne | Salicylic acid, niacinamide, retinoids |
| Hyperpigmentation | Vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha arbutin |
| Anti-aging | Retinol, peptides, vitamin C |
| Hydration | Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides |
| Sensitive | Centella asiatica, panthenol, allantoin |
Start slowly. Apply 2-3 times a week and build up. Mixing multiple actives at once is the fastest way to wreck your skin barrier.
Protect
Morning: SPF 30+, broad spectrum. Every day. We covered why in Why SPF Matters Every Single Day.
Evening: A simple moisturizer suited to your skin type. That's it.
A real morning routine
- Splash with water (or gentle cleanser if you sweated overnight)
- Vitamin C serum (or whatever your active is)
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen
A real evening routine
- Oil cleanser (if you wore makeup or sunscreen)
- Gentle water-based cleanser
- Treatment serum (retinol, niacinamide, etc. — alternate days if multiple)
- Moisturizer
That's six products total at most. Often four. The simplest routine you'll actually do beats the fanciest one you'll skip.
